Saturday 26 September 2020 – Welfair Plenary
12.45 – 13.30
At the outbreak of the recent pandemic caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, Coronavirus disease 2019 was first identified as a severe acute respiratory infection characterized mainly by a picture of interstitial pneumonia. Today the disabling consequences at the level of multiple districts are better known: cardio-vascular system, central and peripheral nervous system and musculoskeletal system, gastro-intestinal system, kidney, liver.
If to these considerations we add, in addition to the known post-intensive syndrome (PICS), caused by the prolonged stay in the Intensive Care Unit and characterized by prolonged muscle atrophy and neuro myopathy, also the aggravation caused by the pre-morbid conditions of the affected subject , the rehabilitation burden required in these patients is even more understood.
In this regard, it is important to underline that rehabilitation should not be considered as a mere management of organic dysfunctions of the different systems, but rather as a global taking over of the “person” by a multidisciplinary and interprofessional team coordinated by the Physiatrist Specialist.
